In September, Samsung C&T was included for two consecutive years in the 2018 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, which is conducted by US’ S&P Dow Jones Indices, the world’s largest provider of financial market information. Samsung C&T was also selected as “best company” by the Korea Corporate Governance Service for the 2018 Best ESG Companies awards.
The DJSI World Index is a global sustainability benchmark of the S&P Dow Jones Indices that represents the top 10% of the 2,500 largest companies in the world in terms of market capitalization after evaluating their sustainability based not only on economic performance but also on environmental, social and governance criteria.
Samsung C&T has reduced greenhouse gas emissions and increased the production and purchase of environment-friendly products by actively carrying out activities for environmental management of water, energy, greenhouse gases, wastes, among others, in a bid to preemptively address climate change issues.
Samsung C&T has also established CSR strategies at the top management level by operating the CSR Committee under the Board of Directors. Using the capabilities of its four business groups (Engineering and Construction, Trading and Investment, Fashion and Resort), the company has performed various kinds of social contribution activities including the Residential Environment Improvement Program (“Samsung Village”), Good Cycling Program, and Junior Samsung C&T Academy.
In addition, Samsung C&T received the “best company” award during the 2018 Best ESG Companies ceremony held in October at Korea Exchange.
The ESG Evaluation is conducted annually by the Korea Corporate Governance Service, the nation’s top agency for corporate governance evaluation subordinate to the Korea Exchange, for more than 900 companies listed on the Korea Stock Exchange based on improvements in their environmental, social and governance criteria. Last year, Samsung C&T received an overall grade of A. This year, the company has been selected as “best company” after receiving an A+ on the strength of improved performances.
The favorable evaluation of Samsung C&T in DJSI and ESG is a result of the company’s efforts to consistently carry out sustainable management activities since the merger in 2015, and is expected to be a positive factor in enhancing its corporate value going forward.
